Understanding Chiropractic

What Is A Subluxation?

When a vertebra or joint in your body loses its normal position and motion, it is referred to as a subluxation.

Joints which are not aligned properly will not move properly and this generates stress on the surrounding tissues, i.e. the muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs and joint surfaces, which cause these structures to become injured or even damaged.

Subluxations can also place pressure on the nerves and cause them to malfunction. Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If you interfere with the signals traveling over nerves, parts of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100%.

What causes subluxations?

Subluxations are caused by everyday activities that place strain on your body, such as:
• Physical causes include acute trauma to the body, repetitive motions, bad postural habits, improper workstation design, weak or imbalanced musculature, etc.
• Chemical causes include poor dietary and nutritional practices, drug and alcohol use and abuse, and the ingestion of chemical toxins in the foods you eat, air you breathe, and water you drink.
• Emotional causes refer to excessive stress or inadequate stress management skills.

How are subluxations corrected?

Doctors of Chiropractic are the only professionals who undergo years of training to be the experts at correcting subluxations. Chiropractors locate subluxations and reduce or correct them through a series of chiropractic adjustments. This is the application of a quick, but gentle, corrective thrust into the subluxated vertebrae or joint. The adjustment can be delivered manually through the hands or can be applied through the use of a specialized tool.

Other techniques such as flexion distraction, spinal decompression, traction, mobilisation techniques, massage, heat and cold therapy, dry needling, strapping techniques, stretch and exercise programs, etc. are often used as complimentary treatment modalities. Because alternative therapies makes the chiropractic adjustment last longer.
